The hardest part of conducting a job interview is quickly figuring out whether there is someone great sitting in front of you. Doing that is especially difficult if the person does not make a good first impression. For that reason, I’m always afraid of missing out on the Classic Coke.

I Don’t Get The Classic Coke Reference

Allow me to explain with a brief sidebar. The term Classic Coke actually emerged from the New Coke debacle of 1985. In 1985, Coca-Cola decided to introduce a new, sweeter flavor of Coke, which was consistently beating both traditional Coke and Pepsi in taste tests. The change did not go over well. In fact, New Coke was so poorly received that Coca-Cola had to pull it in less than 4 months and re-introduce the original flavor which it dubbed Classic Coke.

There are many theories on how Coca-Cola managed to miss the mark so badly. One theory, advanced by Malcolm Gladwell in Blink, proposes that New Coke did well in “sip tests” because the sweeter drink tasted better after a sip or two. However, the less sweet flavor of Classic Coke was prefferrable over a longer duration (i.e. drinking the whole can). In other words, New Coke wowed you initially, but loss its appeal quickly thereafter, while Classic Coke grew on you over time.

Some make a great first impression and then sort of taper off during the course of an interview. Others start off slowly, but get better as you learn more about them. Just like Classic Coke.

I once interviewed a person who had a habit of pausing for a few seconds before answering. Being that I’m pretty inpatient, this habit did not make a good first impression. However, I quickly noticed that although I had to wait a bit for the answers, they were well worth the wait. In fact, as the interview went on, I realized that the person sitting in front of me was actually very knowledgeable, well spoken, and highly intelligent. In short, he was Classic Coke.
