I recently completed another painting and thought it would be fun to share how it evolved.

First, a quick summary of the painting itself. I painted on canvas using acrylic paint, with 4 colors (Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red and Cadmium Yellow). The whole painting took about 4 hours to complete.

Let’s Go to the Videotape

For this painting, I started with a background:

Once that was done, I outlined major elements of the painting:

The next step after that was to color in the spherical shapes. My primary consideration here was create balance by properly distributing the three dominant colors (red, yellow, brown):

Once the composition and color balance were set, it was time to add dimension to the painting.

At this point, I was just looking to create an organic feel without anything specific in mind. Yet as I started to add detail, I accidentally landed on the idea of painting lines connecting spheres as tree branches:

Although accidental, the tree branch look ended working out quite nicely. This actually happens to me pretty often since I lack both the talent and foresight to plan for stuff like this. So, I tend to just dumb luck into things in the middle of painting.

Anyway, with most of the painting complete, it’s just a matter of adding a few finishing touches:
