Dell Announces New Line of Touchless Tablets
December 8th, 2011
BREAKING NEWS: Dell is going to re-enter the tablet market with a new line of touchless tablets. From the announcement:
Our new Prespiron line of touchless tablets represents a level of innovation previously unseen in tablet computing.
We’ve learned a lot of important lessons from the recently discontinued Streak. For example, we now know that “tablet” does not mean “giant phone” to most people. We also discovered that no one wants a 7 inch tablet unless that tablet has the word “Fire” stamped on it.
Most importantly, we learned that to compete in the tablet space, we needed to change the game. In a way, we needed to redefine what a tablet actually is. With Prespiron, we’ve done just that.
Revolutionary Approach
The most striking thing about Dell’s new tablet is its unique form factor. The device comes with a built-in keyboard as well as an input device specifically designed for pixel-perfect interactions. And, although the screen itself is touchless, interacting with the tablet using these peripherals is surprisingly natural.

Users can get multiple USB ports, serial ports, optical drive ports, even multi-card readers.
Another unique thing about Dell’s new tablet is the operating system that runs it. Instead of using a version of Android or some home grown OS, the company has decided to go with Windows 7. “We just felt that the combination of familiarity and a huge number of supported apps made Windows 7 the ideal choice for our new tablet”, Dell explained.
Limitless Configurability
True to Dell’s style, Prespiron tablets are highly configurable. Customers can choose what processor to use, how much memory and storage to add, how large to make the (touchless) screen, even what color the lid should be.
Furthermore, customers can choose to pre-load a variety of apps optimized for the device (this, of course, is in addition to a top notch selection of apps Dell will conveniently pre-install on every Prespiron).
Bottom Line
The new Prespiron tablet is a great device, with oodles of computing power jam packed into its slim, 5-7 lb body. Its unique design will surely make this tablet stand out in a crowded market, finally giving consumers a viable alternative to the iPad/Fire duopoly.

I believe we are at the dawn of a new IT revolution. When my Dell touchless got delivered, I was asked to sign a delivery paper form. The delivery guy had this incredible portable printer he let me use. I’m sure it’s some kind of secret beta-test thing, because when I checked with Bic, they claimed the have no portable printers.
Yes, I’ve been hearing rumors about Bic’s portable printers for a while now, but they’ve always denied them. hmm…
